A Mug of Cocoa

Chill.
Painfully cold.
I step inside from the unforgiving chill.
But the chill clings to me.
I stand by the fire listening to it crack.
"Here."
I'm handed a mug of cocoa, hidden under a pile of marshmallows.
With shaking hands I grasp the mug, while my thawing clothes drip on the floor.
I take one small sip.
Warmth slides down my throat and spreads through my body.
I sigh with content.
"Thank you." I whisper.
I take another sip, just as wonderful as the last.
They just laughed and replied, "You looked like you needed it."
They leave me with my mug of cocoa.

A Moment

All days uniform.
Every day the same.
The same chatter.
Is it scripted?
The same gossip,
Do things ever change?
Out of nowhere, there's a spark.
My mind reals and my heart races.
Colors spin around me.
I don't know where they came from or where they go.
The world moves faster, yet each second see.ms longer.
A flash, a breath, a spark, a kiss.
A moment.
It's beautiful, it's indescribable, it's magical.
It's a moment.
Then it's gone.
I'm haunted by the magic of a moment.

The Goose-Swan

The feeling of being out of place.
Like you don't quite fit.
Like being a goose among swans.
Just missing normal by an inch.
I'm new here.
I'm new at being a swan.
They've been swans their whole life.
While I'm playing catch up.
So, I don't quite fit.

That's When It Happens

That's when it happens.
When the sunset hits that point.
When the light hits the ridge just right.
When the wind becomes a soft breeze.
When the green grass caresses your toes.
That's when it happens.
That's when this dark world sees a little magic.

A Dream

We all have dreams.
We all have hope.
I believe they are one in the same.
I hope, I dream.
I can see my dream as clear as day.
I can feel my hope more solid than wood.
I have a hope.
I have a dream.

Poverty

Poverty. Poverty at its cruelest. When you watch a little girl eat dirt from a cup. When you see little boys without any clothes. When a mother thanks you over and over for a dress for her baby. When you make a child's day by giving them a sip of water. When a village is made from sticks. When you're considered lucky to have a pair of shoes. When everyone lines up for a bag of rice. WHen you cry as you drive away, knowing what you get to go home to. Knowing they're still there. Yes I've seen poverty. I've seen poverty at its cruelest.

Change

Change happens.
Life has a way of making it.
There are harsh ways of it happening.
But also gentle.
Though that is rare.
Life gives us cruel wake up calls.
Like when you see a child that hasn't eaten in weeks.
It changes you.
It changes your heart.
It changes how you see the world.
When life changes you you're never the same again.
You come out stronger.
Wiser.
The way you think changes.
The way you feel.
Change happens.
Change happened.
